Abstract

Rapid urbanization and increasing motorization in developing cities have led to growing challenges such as traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and declining urban living quality. In this context, the development of bicycle infrastructure is considered one of the key components of sustainable urban mobility. However, the successful implementation of cycling as a mode of transport largely depends on scientifically based planning of bicycle path networks.

The purpose of this paper is to systematize and comparatively analyze scientific approaches and methods for planning bicycle path networks while considering the specific characteristics of developing cities. The study examines regulatory and planning approaches, transport modeling methods, spatial (GIS-based) analysis, as well as social, environmental, and economic methods for designing bicycle networks. Particular attention is paid to evaluating their applicability under conditions of limited resources, insufficient baseline data, and fragmented urban development.

The results indicate that integrated approaches combining regulatory requirements, spatial analysis, traffic safety assessment, and socio-environmental criteria provide the highest effectiveness. The findings can be applied in developing strategies for bicycle infrastructure and creating sustainable urban transport systems in developing cities.
